A Simple, Quick Training for Tutors: M.O.V.E.

Most peer tutoring programs fail before the tutor ever sits down.

We place young leaders around our building. But placement without training is just supervision.

So we built M.O.V.E.

M — Make the first move.
For years, we've told students to wait for direction. Tutors do the opposite. They move around the room. Proactively. Purposefully.

O — Observe before you assume.
Not every student needs help. Some are working hard. A good tutor reads the room first.

V — Verify what's happening at the desk.
Don't open with "Do you need help?" Pull up a chair. Ask "Show me what you're working on." Then listen.

E — Exit well.
Tutors don't leave because a freshman says "I'm good." They leave because the student shows them they're good. Then move to the next student.

Four steps. Trained peer tutors who actually change outcomes for freshmen.

If your district is building a peer support program — don't skip the training.
